From Caribbean to Atlantic – My Favorite Tour
Discover the real Dominican Republic, hidden from tourists! Wild Caribbean shores, a river canyon filled with pelicans and iguanas, ancient caves with Taino petroglyphs, and a secret blue-water lake. A fishing village with the best seafood, scenic local villages, and a sunset at Macao Beach. Pure nature, history, and culture without the crowds—this journey reveals the Dominican Republic as it truly is!
Itinerary:
✅ Heading Southeast: We begin our journey by exploring the untouched Caribbean coastline. Our first stop is Boca de Yuma, a charming fishing village on the edge of civilization, right next to a national park.
✅ River through the Cliffs: This is a true pelican jungle. The birds soar above us like pterosaurs, creating the sensation that we’re in a Jurassic Park. The river winds through towering cliffs, and the experienced eye of the boat captain rarely misses the iguanas basking on the rocks. The sheer variety of birds is truly awe-inspiring. There’s also a cave, its entrance sealed with stones—local legend says pirates once hid their treasure there.
✅ Hidden Beach on the Caribbean Sea: From the river, we go straight into the Caribbean Sea and, rounding a rocky massif, we find a small beach. There is no other way to get here, which is why most often, it is just us on this beach.
✅ Ancient Caves & Taino Petroglyphs: We visit a cave adorned with ancient Taino rock carvings, a fascinating glimpse into the island’s past.
✅ Blue Water Cave Swim: **This is the most difficult part of the journey. This point is only optional if you are confident in yourself. There have been no problems so far, but I cannot call this section of the route safe.**
The lake is not a tourist spot and is hidden in a national park. In some places, you will have to climb over rocks. However, the blue water of the lake is definitely worth the risk. The water bubbles like mineral water and restores lost energy many times over. Who knows, maybe this is the very Fountain of Youth that Ponce de León was searching for here.
✅ Seafood Lunch (Optional / Not included): As I already mentioned, Boca de Yuma is a fishing town, and locals come here to enjoy seafood. It is probably the only place in our province where people travel specifically for seafood. All the cafés are located along a cliff overlooking the Caribbean Sea, offering breathtaking views! Plus, the prices are much more pleasant than in Punta Cana. And, of course, the food is absolutely delicious!
✅ We can also visit the House-Museum of Juan Ponce de León, the legendary conquistador who sought the Fountain of Youth. Yes, yes, it was his card that Jack Sparrow used in the famous film. This navigator was also the first to discover Florida and came up with its name.
✅ Basilica La Altagracia and the Miraculous Icon: The icon is the most revered relic in the country, and on its feast day (January 21), hundreds of people come to the basilica to touch it. The locals are convinced of the icon’s miraculous powers. On regular days, you can touch it without a long wait. The basilica itself is an architectural gem. Its design is unique, and you have definitely never seen anything like it before.
✅ Scenic Drive Through Local Villages: The road from the town of Higüey to Macao Beach first allows you to experience the daily life of the local villages, and then reveals beautiful views of palm groves framed by a low mountain ridge.
✅ Relaxation & Sunset at Macao Beach: At the end of our journey, we head to the Atlantic Macao Beach. Once again, we swim, and once again, the surroundings amaze with their beauty. Our route is so well-balanced that by the time we reach the final point, we are very close to Punta Cana, yet we’ve hardly traveled on the same road twice. All of this makes this trip the most recommended route by me.
